Wagangxi Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Central-westernmost Hubei. The Wagangxi Fm was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, Hubei Bureau of Geology in 1974. The type section is in Songziyuan, Lianghekou, Badong County, Hubei Province. Upper formation (11 of 11 in Lexicon) of Shennongjia Gr.

Lithology and Thickness
The Wagangxi Fm is composed of magnesian carbonate (dolomitic) rock and minor fine-clastic rock. Lower part consists of grey-white thick-bedded stromatolite-reef-bearing dolomite and greyish, greyish-yellow and light purple fine-crystalline dolomite and muddy dolomite. Middle part is grey thick-bedded stromatolite-bearing limestone and dark-grey thick-bedded medium-crystalline dolomite. Upper part is composed of purple-red medium-thin-bedded muddy dolomite and grey-green, grey-purple dolomitic siltstone. It is recorded as 190-207 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in disconformable contact with underlying Songziyuan Fm.
Upper contact
The top is unconformably overlain by the Nantuo Fm or by the Macaoyuan Fm formerly within this Shennongjia Gr).
Regional extent
Central-westernmost Hubei. The formation is mainly distributed in Wujiaya, Lianghekou, Badong County of Shennongjia Forest District, and around, Changhe and Songhe rivers, Jingshan County in Dahong Mountain, Hubei Province.

Stromatolites occurring in the lower middle and lower parts: Conophyton wagangxiense, Cryptozoon f., Stratifera f. Microplants are Asperatopsophosphaera, Quadratimorpha, Polyporata, Leiominuscula, Leiopsophosphaera.
